Corruption Report and Index of Transparency International The standard/most frequently used indicator of how corrupt a country's government is.
The 2004 Economic Freedom Index is the current index of the Heritage Foundation country economic freedom rankings. (See also country rankings.) Perhaps too concerned with making the world safe for capital investment/multinational corporations, but still very valuable--government policies do influence economic activity.
Human Rights A standard way, and probably the most important way, of keeping a tyrannical regime in power is by murder, imprisonment and torture of those who disagree, as well as other limitations on human freedom such as freedom of expression. Severe human rights violations can also occur at the hands of those who are trying to gain power The Human Rights Reports describe human rights practices by country, and are written by the U.S. Department of State. Amnesty International, a leading human rights organization tries to keep track of those who are imprisoned or have suffered other major human rights violations. See the links page for further information. See also Human Rights Watch.
Women in Development/Gender Women are frequently subjugated in the societies in which they live. The Association of Women In Development (AWID) is an international organization concerned with this issue. The website has links to other organizations. UNIFEM is the United Nations Fund for Women.
